I discovered a book called 'The Garden Of Kama' in the library of my house in Farnham. It was published in 1901 and is a fascinating collection of Indian love lyrics, adapted and translated into English.
I immediately felt a strong motivation to use the book as the basis for a symphonic piece - and at first it was my intention to write a symphony based on the ideas in the book. As my thoughts developed, it became clear to me that the piece should be a choral piece, interposing the more classical, orchestral elements with pop, rock and ethnic elements. It would, effectively be a symphonic suite and a song cycle 'shuffled' together so as to present an adventurous and passionate journey through the GARDEN OF KAMA - (literally, 'The Garden Of Love')
The stories in the book, as told in the poems, are very dramatic, moving from famine to jealousy and murder. I would write new songs drawing upon these ideas.
The illustrations are particularly inspirational.
Star guests
I have already securred the commitment of various star artists to contribute a performance and perhaps co-write some of the songs.
Indian love poems jump into living, breathing songy and symphonyish bits.
The album should contain strong songs from which to choose singles. We will need three strong singles.
We should create a visual artistic counterpart to the album,- in the form of a
ballet-inspired audio visual experience. This would use the ?Batt-vision? technique used in previous productions. The songs would appear throughout and be sung as part of a strong visual, dramatic piece. It would be rather like a 'live' pop video, on stage, lasting one hour.
